thanks Rob! I suspect I’ve been getting some false positives, I think there are traffic control cameras that people think are red light cameras. I’m not sure exactly what the difference is (visually) myself. I’ll have to do some research on it.
In the meantime I’ll start adding your list to the map, this looks perfect, thanks. Where’d you find the list? I dug around for a complete one but could never find it.
Turns out there were two cameras that I didn’t have mapped, both in Coram, they’re on the map now. I had some trouble adding two of the cameras from your list. Number 40 – looks like it should be route 25, and number 45 – I can’t seem to find that intersection.
Number 40 is 25A and Rocky Point Landing Rd in Rocky Point and number 45 is North Ocean Ave (CR83) and Middle Country Rd (RT25) in Selden.
A map of the Suffolk County cameras can be found http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=204022826143008654763.00049e78cdb5f110e68b3 and Nassau County cameras http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&t=h&z=12&msid=204022826143008654763.00047c1f1949ba39d52c0.
Looks good, thanks Rob, I’ll add those cameras to the map as well!
you say there are only 50 red light cameras in suffolk county. there are probably 30 cameras alone on route 347 in suffolk.
Suffolk has approval from the state for 50 cameras. If you know of more cameras than what I have listed here, just submit them and I’ll add them to the map. That said, there definitely aren’t 30 red light cameras on route 347. Maybe you’re mistaking the traffic control cameras for red light cameras, I get those regularly and I add them to the map until someone else writes in to let me know that they’re not really red light cameras.
Mike, the previous poster who said there are like 30 cameras on 347 is correct. EACH INTERSECTION in general has between 2 and 4 cameras(this goes for ALL intersections). I believe the “50 cameras” term is really “50 intersections are photo enforced”, and every one of those intersections has up to 4 cameras!! SO, they should really be saying we have “50 red light enforced intersections in Suffolk, each one having between one and four cameras in use,.. Steve CHECK OUT THIS LIST OF CAMERAS FROM NEWSDAY! http://www.newsday.com/red-light-cameras-on-long-island-1.2224592
Thanks Steve, that may be correct that they consider one intersection a camera location regardless of how many cameras they put there, it makes sense to me. But even if you figure there are 4 cameras at each intersection on route 347, there still aren’t 30. Anyway the more important thing is to count which intersections the cameras are at, not how many there are per intersection.
thanks for the link to the newsday list, I’d looked at that before, it’s similar to mine.
Mike, you are correct there are not 30 cameras along 347, prob more like 15 total in 6 intersections….do you have any new camera locations in nassau or suffolk?
Actually there are about 5 that have been submitted over the last week or so that I haven’t added to the map yet, I just haven’t had the time to review them and make sure they’re not dupes etc. I’ll try to do it tonight, either way I’ll post back here when they’re up. I’m a little wary of adding new Suffolk ones, someone had posted a list of the 50 intersections for me about a month or two ago, so I think I have them all and the only new ones coming in are actually traffic cameras. But it doesn’t hurt that much to add them, eventually someone else who knows the intersection will post and tell me that they’re traffic cameras and I’ll remove them. I’m thinking about setting up some sort of a ‘vote’ system where everyone can vote on a camera to say whether it’s really a red light camera or not. Cameras with a lot of votes against them will automatically disappear. Anyway that’s neither here nor there – so short answer to your question, yep there are some new cameras and I’ll add them soon as I have a bit more time!
Do the cameras operate N/S as well as E/W
Yes I believe they do, most of the ones I’ve seen always seem to have cameras aimed in all directions. I could be wrong though.
