Suffolk and Nassau: No New Cameras

I’m a bit late on this one, I saw the Newsday article a couple of weeks ago but didn’t have time to post about it. Newsday had reported in May that Suffolk received approval from the state Senate to increase to 100 cameras, and that the bill would then go before the Assembly.

On June 25th Newsday reported that the Suffolk bill and the Nassau one to expand the cameras are probably not going to pass.

That was meant to be decided a couple of Fridays ago, and since then I haven’t seen anything in Newsday saying the cameras were approved. So it looks like both Nassau and Suffolk will stay at 50.

I have recvd two tickets for making a right on red. From South/East bound Vets hwy in Islandia, making a right onto North bound Old nichols road. There are no “No right on red” signs though. Will be contesting today.

That’s interesting Jennifer – my wife got a ticket at the south intersection there, making a right from nichols onto the LIE north service road. In her photo and video the sign for ‘no right on red’ was clearly visible, unfortunately for us!

What if theres a camera at an intersection where there’s a “Stop” line and then you see a “yield” sign? Do you have to stop? Or do you yield as you would always???

    • Mike says:

Good question Christine I wondered the same thing myself. I looked up the requirements for a yield sign on the New York State DMV website, looks to me like you don’t have to stop.

I have the same situation on my way to work every morning, there’s a red light camera at an intersection where I make a right turn, and there’s a right turn lane with a yield sign. I used to come to a complete stop even if it obviously wasn’t necessary. After a while I got tired of that crap and decided to take a chance and roll through it slowly. So far no tickets! I’d say it’s been about a month since the first time I tried that, so who knows. Maybe I’m in the clear, or maybe I’m about to start receiving a month’s worth of tickets.

But it looks to me that based on the description posted on the DMV website, a complete stop is not necessary.
