Nassau County’s report on their red light camera numbers shows that, overall, accidents have been reduced at intersections with cameras (Newsday article here). The only exception was the entrance to Roosevelt Field mall, where accidents went up.
I’m not a big fan of the cameras but I can’t argue with them if they’re proven to reduce accidents, which seems to be the case. I bet this means more cameras are in our future, just a matter of time.
At the intersections of Wolf Hill Road & Carman Road and at Wolf Hill Road & Old Country Road & Pidgeon Hill Road, new traffic signals are being installed. There are some type of cameras installed on top of the traffic signals. They don’t look like what I’ve come to recognize as red light cameras. All red light cameras I’ve seen so far are on poles planted in the ground at the side of the road. Are the cameras on top of traffic signals an alternate type of red-light cameras or something else entirely? Also, I know there is a red light camera on the eastbound Expressway Drive South & Route 231 in Dix Hills, but it is not on your map. Thank you for clarifying what are the cameras on top of the traffic signals on Wolf Hill Road.
Hi Mildred, I’m pretty sure the cameras you mentioned are for traffic control, a few people have mentioned them here before. I believe they help decide when the light turns green etc. They’re putting in a few just like that near where I live in Smithtown.
Thanks for letting me know about the camera in Dix Hills, I added it to the map! I had the one on Expressway Drive North but not South.
