Suffolk and Nassau: No New Cameras

I’m a bit late on this one, I saw the Newsday article a couple of weeks ago but didn’t have time to post about it. Newsday had reported in May that Suffolk received approval from the state Senate to increase to 100 cameras, and that the bill would then go before the Assembly.

On June 25th Newsday reported that the Suffolk bill and the Nassau one to expand the cameras are probably not going to pass.

That was meant to be decided a couple of Fridays ago, and since then I haven’t seen anything in Newsday saying the cameras were approved. So it looks like both Nassau and Suffolk will stay at 50.

Removed a few cameras today

Received word from some readers that a few cameras I had listed were actually for traffic control, not red light cameras. Thanks for the tips! Here are the removed cameras:

I Do Volunteer Web Development (FREE!)

This is completely off topic but I’d like to do volunteer web development for certain charitable organizations. If anyone is interested just leave a comment here and I’ll get back to you. I only do one project at a time though. Here are more details:

  • As far as organizations I’ll work for, there are mainly just two types:
    1. Those that benefit our military servicemen and women.
    2. Those that benefit animals.
  • I’m a professional web developer with about 8 years experience.
  • I’m extremely good at making things work smoothly and efficiently.
  • I’m extremely bad at making things “look pretty.”

So if you need a designer to come up with a great new look for your site, I wouldn’t be too much of a help. But if you have an idea of what you want your site to look like and need someone to put it together for you, that’s where I can help.

I don’t always have a lot of free time so nothing will get done in one day, but you can’t argue with the price! I can handle just about any size website.

Leave a comment below if you think there’s something I can help with.

Finally – 100 Facebook likes!

Completely off topic but today I got my 100th ‘like’ on facebook! Took a while, those last 10 or 20 were slow to come in. Two of these are me and my wife so maybe technically I’m still at 98 but I count it as 100 : )

New Red Light Camera in Suffolk

I spotted a new camera in Hauppauge today at Old Willets Path and Route 454, I added it to the map. I drive through that intersection every day, this is the first time I noticed the camera, so it must be recent, if not just added today.

Any Interest in Mapping the Kings Point Cameras?

Many of you may have read in Newsday that Kings Point has plans for 40 cameras to monitor license plates and notify police if someone with bad plates (arrest warrant, stolen vehicle, etc) wanders into the neighborhood. I don’t have any particular plans to add those locations, but would anyone like to see them mapped here? Post a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

FYI my understanding is that this technology has been in some police cars on Long Island for a while now, but Kings Point is the first to mount them around town for automated surveillance.

Added Two New Cameras Today

I’m way behind on blog posts, sorry about that! I added two new red light cameras today that were submitted by visitors. They are:

  • Hauppauge - Oser Avenue and Old Willets Path
  • North Amityville – Route 109 and Southern State Parkway (I already have one right near there, at Route 109 and New Highway, so this could be a dupe or it could be two cameras on each side of the parkway)

I’m sure there are a lot in Suffolk that I don’t have, since there are apparently 100 active cameras and I don’t have that many. If you see one that I don’t have please add it!
