Eight New Cameras Added This Weekend

Over the weekend I received 9 new red light camera locations and added 8 of them (1 was a duplicate of a camera I already had listed). Seven of the new cameras are in Nassau County, the remaining is in Suffolk. I don’t know if these already existed and I just didn’t have them listed, or if they were recently put up. Here’s the list:

  1. Manhasset: Northern Boulevard and Port Washington Boulevard
  2. Old Westbury: Jericho Turnpike and Glen Cove Road
  3. Levittown: Hempstead Turnpike and Gardiners Avenue
  4. Levittown: Hempstead Turnpike and North Wantagh Avenue
  5. Wantagh: Wantagh Avenue and Sunrise Highway
  6. West Hempstead: Nassau Boulevard and Hempstead Turnpike
  7. Uniondale: Hempstead Turnpike and Uniondale Avenue
  8. East Farmingdale: Route 110 and Conklin Street

The latitude/longitude list and downloadable GPS file (.gpx) have been updated to include these new cameras.

Does Right on Red Require a 3-Second Stop?

Some Newsday readers wrote letters to Newsday regarding the red light camera situation and made some interesting points. Joy Ottaviano of Garden City said she stopped at a light, then proceeded to make a right on red. Eventually he was mailed a ticket, and a clerk told him he was required to stop at the light for a minimum of 3 seconds.

I’ve never heard of that, has anyone else?

Suffolk Red Light Camera Video Compilation

Suffolk County also released a video compilation showing a bunch of people blowing lights, some leading to accidents. The majority of clips show cars going through the light right after it turned, meaning the drivers probably knew the light was turning and tried to beat the yellow. One of the accident clips shows a driver who clearly wasn’t paying attention and blew through a solid red light and got T-boned. Another accident clip shows a truck attempting to make a right turn from the middle lane and hitting a car in the right-lane. Anyway here’s the video, see for yourself:

Nassau’s New Cameras for 2011 Tied to Youth Programs

Another article from Newsday a week or so ago goes into detail about why Nassau County’s batch of 50 new cameras for 2011 has been delayed. Note that I’ve spotted a new camera in Nassau this year myself, and several of my visitors have added new cameras that I didn’t previously have on the list, which makes me wonder if Nassau started installing them early.

Anyway, according to the article, when Nassau Executive Edward Mangano proposed the new cameras, he tied the camera revenue to the County’s youth programs. I’ve always thought it was obvious that the cameras there to generate revenue regardless of whether they make the intersection more safe, but this is the first time I’ve seen where an official made the mistake of proposing new cameras specifically to fund other projects. They need to at least pretend that safety is the main reason, while revenue generation is just a happy side effect.

Suffolk County’s Red Light Cameras – All Up and Running

In case you missed Newsday’s article from about 2 weeks ago, Suffolk County announced that all 100 of their red light cameras are up and operational. According to the article, Suffolk has issued 98,000 citations since the cameras started going up in June 2010.

Meanwhile, the New York State Senate transportation committee was scheduled to vote last week on allowing 50 more cameras in Suffolk County (and presumably the new batch of 50 for Nassau County that they planned to add this year). I haven’t heard what the outcome of that vote was though.

Lastly, Mark Smith, a spokesman for Steve Levy, said that depending on the effectiveness of the cameras, Suffolk may add more next year. I thought the “may add more” part was pretty funny. I predict more cameras regardless of the effect on safety, since it’s all about generating revenue.

GPS File: GPX XML File With All LI Red Light Cameras

This is a ‘.gpx’ file, which can be imported into your GPS device and will show a ‘Danger Area’ icon where a red light camera is located.

I haven’t had time to fully test this but from what I can tell the format is correct and it should work on all GPS devices that support .gpx files (Garmin for sure, and I believe TomTom as well). If you have any trouble PLEASE post a comment below and I WILL fix it as soon as possible. The goal is to make this file work for everyone’s GPS so I need your feedback to make that happen!

Besides that minor request, it’s provided completely free, enjoy!

GPS File: List of LI Red Light Camera Latitudes and Longitudes

Someone mentioned that they were manually getting the latitude and longitude values for all the cameras I have listed, and inserting them one by one into their GPS. So here’s a simple list of all the lat/long values for every camera, along with the town and intersection for each one.

This list will always be automatically updated whenever a new camera is added, and therefore will always be up to date.

The Commute Checker is Fixed

I just realized today that the commute checker was completely broken, sorry about that! The facebook ‘like’ code was missing and it caused some javascript problems.

Anyway it’s fixed now, feel free to check again for red light cameras along your route to work (or wherever).

Nassau County’s Batch of New Cameras for 2011

So I read in Newsday on Friday that Nassau’s latest batch of 50 cameras for 2011 are stuck at the State Assembly. The main reason is that many Assembly members don’t seem to like the idea that Managano’s emphasis is on money and revenue generation as opposed to public safety. Some other useful info from the article:

  • Nassau made $10.3 million dollars last year on red light camera tickets, and hopes to make $47 million this year.
  • The locations of the 50 new cameras for 2011 haven’t been finalized yet.

This comes as a surprise to me, mainly because in the past week or so I’ve added 5 new cameras in Nassau County. Four of them were submitted by visitors using the ‘Add a New Camera‘ link, and the fifth was added by me. It’s quite possible that the 4 submitted by visitors were there all along and I missed them, I don’t drive in those areas of Nassau too often so I wouldn’t know where the cameras are. Or maybe those cameras aren’t really red light cameras but they’re something else, I don’t know. But the one I added (Underhill Boulevard and Jericho in Syosset) is definitely the same as all the other red light cameras on Long Island and was definitely not there before – I drive through that intersection every day for the past few years and I never saw it before.

So either it’s from Nassau’s original batch of 50, which could only be possible if they didn’t use them all, or if they moved one from some other intersection to here. Or, it’s from the new batch of 50, which is exactly what I thought when I first saw it. But now we’re hearing that the new batch is stalled in the State Assembly.

So the question is, did Nassau start putting up new cameras before getting 100% approval?

Four in a Row for the Commack Road Camera this Morning

So I was on my way to work this morning, around 8:30 AM, and I stopped at Commack Road and Jericho in Suffolk County when the light turned red.

While I was waiting, not one, not two, not three, but four cars made rights on red without stopping, and the red light camera caught every one of them. This happened one after the other in the space of about 5 seconds. They did slow down and there were no cars in their way, but the camera doesn’t care about that. I saw it flash as each of them made their turn, I couldn’t believe the last couple of drivers didn’t notice it and stop.

About a minute after they turned, another car drove up to make a right on red, came to just about a complete stop, and then turned. No flash for that one so I guess no ticket.

Be careful when you make your right on red – doesn’t matter if there are no cars for miles, Suffolk and Nassau need your money!
